A 24-year-old Irish woman was assaulted by her partner at their Paphos apartment late on Tuesday night, prompting neighbours to call the police after hearing loud screams from the residence.

According to Paphos police spokesperson Michalis Nicolaou, officers were dispatched to a flat in the Kato Paphos area at approximately 11.20pm following multiple emergency calls from concerned residents.

Upon arrival, police found the woman, identified as Amy, visibly distressed and suffering from facial bruising, a split lip and what appeared to be defensive wounds on her arms. She told officers that the argument with her partner, 27-year-old Michalis Ioannidis, had escalated after a night out in the harbour area.

"She was shaken and crying when we arrived," said one officer at the scene. "She kept saying she just wanted to go home to Ireland."

Amy, who had moved to Paphos six months ago to live with Ioannidis after meeting him during a summer holiday, was taken by ambulance to Paphos General Hospital. Medical staff treated her for minor lacerations and contusions, keeping her under observation until Wednesday morning.

Ioannidis was arrested at the apartment and taken to Paphos central police station for questioning. He is expected to appear before a district court on Thursday morning facing charges of assault, causing actual bodily harm and domestic violence.

The Irish embassy in Nicosia has been notified and is understood to be providing consular assistance to Amy, who is now staying at a local women's shelter. Friends in Paphos told the Cyprus Mail she had mentioned tensions in the relationship in recent weeks but had not expected the situation to turn violent.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
